HOUSTON, TX – HCU women's basketball lost late to the Texas A&M-Corpus Islanders in Sharp Gym Saturday afternoon.
HCU (8-10, 3-4 SLC) jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead on a
N'Denasija Collins made jump shot on the Huskies opening possession. The first period was neck and neck the entire way as the lead changed seven times. With just over two minutes to play in the first,
Kennedy Wilson knocked down a mid-range jumper to cut the lead to one.
Texas A&M-Corpus (11-7, 6-1 SLC) made a three pointer on their next trip down the floor to take a four point lead, their largest of the period.
HCU and TAMCC were back and forth over the second and third quarters, combining for 14 lead changes. The Huskies saw their largest lead of the game, seven, in the third quarter after opening the period on an 11-3 run.
Over that stretch the Huskies shot five-of-eight from the floor.
Marilyn Nzoiwu knocked down a couple of mid-range jump shots before
Enya Maguire came off the bench and knocked down a corner three.
Corpus cut the lead back down to just three on a layup before Violeta Verano knocked down a mid-range jumper as the period ended.
Texas A&M-Corpus took over in the fourth quarter, holding the Huskies to just 2-of-9 shooting. Meanwhile on the offensive side of the ball the Islander knocked down shots at an 83 percent clip (10-of-12) including 3-of-4 from deep and would go on to win 57-42.
Collins had another strong offensive outing, scoring a game-high 17 points on 80 percent shooting. Alicia Westbrook had a 13-point 13-rebound double-double for the Islanders, one of three scoring in double figures.
Abbey Sutherland, Wilson, and
Marilyn Nzoiwu each had six points.
The Huskies hit the road for two conference games next week, first in Natchitoches, Louisiana to face Northwestern State before traveling to Commerce to take on the Lady Lions.
