BEAUMONT, Texas - HCU opens Southland Conference play by renewing its rivalry with Lamar Saturday at 3 p.m. at Provost Umphrey Stadium. Houston Christian University (HCU), formerly known as Houston Baptist University (HBU), underwent a name change in September 2022.
 
The Husky Sports Network audio brodcast with Russ Reneau will be available on HCUHuskies.com and the game will be shown on ESPN+.
 
Junior quarterback Justin Fomby has completed 63-of-111 passes for 738 yards, six touchdowns and two interceptions for HCU (1-2, 0-0 SLC). Junior wide receiver Karl Reynolds has made 15 catches for 258 yards and a touchdown. The Huskies are missing freshman running back Ismail Mahdi, who is out with a foot injury, and has 263 yards rushing, 149 yards receiving and three total touchdowns. Sophomore RJ Smith and freshman Nate Livingston are expected to see the bulk of the carries.
 
Sophomore linebacker Rodney Dansby leads the team with 28 tackles, while senior linebacker Brennan Young and sophomore safety Isaiah Cash each have 27 and junior linebacker Jalyx Hunt has 25 and also leads the Huskies with 3.5 sacks. Senior Coi Miller and junior Jordan Oliver each have an interception.
 
Nick Yockey has completed 32-of-57 passes for 317 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions for the Cardinals (0-4, 0-1). Khalan Griffin has rushed for 142 yards and a touchdown and Damashja Harris has rushed for 125 yards. Sevonne Rhea has made 10 catches for 240 yards and a touchdown and Jalen Dummett has 16 catches for 192 yards and two scores.
 
Tyler Jackson leads LU defensively with 25 stops and Kristian Pugh and Ramond Stevens each have 21. Jalen Freeman has a pair of sacks and four different players have an interception.
 
LU leads the all-time series, 4-2, but HCU won the last meeting, 31-26, on Nov. 16, 2019, in Houston.
 
HCU returns home for back-to-back games at Husky Stadium, hosting Nicholls Oct. 8, followed by Northwestern State Oct. 15.
