WSOC: HCU Plays Visiting UIW to a 0-0 Draw

The Huskies pick up four points in a pair of SLC matches this weekend

HOUSTON – Just two days after scoring a season-high four goals the HCU women's soccer team played to a 0-0 tie in a Southland Conference matchup with UIW on Sunday afternoon at Sorrels Field. Houston Christian University (HCU), formerly Houston Baptist University (HBU), underwent a name change in September 2022.

UIW (1-5-2, 0-2-2 SLC) quickly got a great look when Meredith Caviglia found herself one-on-one with HCU (1-6-3, 1-2-1 SLC) keeper Chloe Bagshaw less than 40 seconds into play but her shot missed high over the crossbar. Just over a minute later, the Huskies' Emily Jaimes had space not far from the goal but missed wide left. The Cardinals earned a free kick just outside the 18 yard box in the 21st minute and Keeley Ayala's free kick attempt to the top shelf was deflected over the crossbar by Bagshaw. The Huskies' lone shot on goal of the half was a laser from distance off the foot of Isabella Cheek but UIW's Margaret Kofron was there to make the save.

Caviglia put a shot attempt on target with Bagshaw making the save at the 51:25 mark with Sierra Wannamaker missing high just a few minutes later. The Huskies saw perhaps their best opportunity stopped in the 60th minute after a bobble by Kofron ended up at the feet of Adi Radwanski whose on target shot was cleared out by a defender with Kofron recovering quickly to make a save on a shot by Felicia Hernandez just a few seconds later. The only other shot on goal came from UIW in the 79th minute.

Bagshaw finished with four saves to record her second shutout of the season and lower her goals against average to 1.67. The Cardinals held a 14-9 advantage in shots with four on goal to HCU's three. The Huskies had the advantage in corner kicks, earning five to UIW's three.

HCU is back on the road for its next game, playing Northwestern State in Natchitoches, La. on Friday, Sep. 30.
