WSOC: Huskies Take Down Northwestern State on the Road, 1-0

Mia Salas scores the game-winner in the first half

NATCHITOCHES, La. – The HCU women's soccer team, winless on the road in its first seven matches away from home this season, picked up road win number one of the season against defending conference champion Northwestern State with a 1-0 victory at the Lady Demon Soccer Complex on Friday night. Houston Christian University (HCU), formerly Houston Baptist University (HBU), underwent a name change in September 2022.

The game started out quietly with Mia Salas registering a shot on goal from distance just inside the five minute mark, forcing Chloe Deshazer to make a save. The Huskies (2-6-3, 2-2-1 SLC) struck in the 32nd minute when Kat Lazor lined up for a free kick in the HCU defensive half, sending a ball into the Northwestern State (5-3-2, 2-2-1 SLC) 18-yard box with it landing at the feet of Mia Salas who never hesitated in sending a shot to the top right corner for the goal.

Salas had one more attempt on goal in the second half in the 51st minute, accounting for all of the team's shots in the game. The Lady Demons put three attempts on target in the second half but Huskies' keeper Chloe Bagshaw and the HCU defense secured their second-straight clean sheet.

Salas' goal is her second in the last three games and her second of the season. Lazor's assist was her first of the year. Bagshaw totaled three saves in the win with the HCU defense also registering a team save.

With the win, the Huskies earn three points in the standings and are now in a four-way tie for fourth place. Northwestern State held an 8-4 advantage in shot attempts.

The Huskies are back at Sorrels Field for their next game on Friday, Oct. 7, when they host Nicholls at 5:00 p.m.
