WSOC: Huskies Down Lady Lions and Earn first Conference Win of the Season

Emily Jaimes scores twice for HCU

HOUSTON – The HCU women's soccer team won their first Southland Conference game of the season in dominating fashion over the Southeastern Lady Lions Friday night at Sorrels Field. Houston Christian University (HCU), formerly Houston Baptist University (HBU), underwent a name change in September 2022.

The Huskies (1-6-2, 1-2 SLC) jumped on the board early in the sixth minute when Talin Rizo (1) scored an unassisted goal from 25 yards out. 15-minutes later Evelyn Slaughter beat her defender on the edge of the 18-yard box sent a cross past the keeper to the feet of Xya Balderas (2) who put it in the back of the net for a 2-0 HCU lead.

The Huskies tacked on an insurance goal in the 31st minute when Mia Salas took a shot from 20-yards out which was deflected off of the diving keepers' hands straight to the feet of Emily Jaimes (2) who was able to send it past the retreating keeper for a 3-0 HCU advantage.

It took just three second half minutes for HCU to find the back of the net again. It was Jaimes (2) again scoring for the Huskies. This time she got a deflection off of a SLU defender in the corner of the 18-yard box turned left and rocketed a shot around the keeper towards the back post and in to give the Huskies a 4-0 lead, their largest of the season.

Shamoy Campbell scored her first goal of the season for Southeastern in the 49th minute which was assisted by Emma Ramsey.

HCU lead SLU in total shots and shots on goal, 18-9 and 9-2 respectively. Sophie Wendt had five saves across nine attempts for the Lady Lions while Chloe Bagshaw had one save for the Huskies.

The Huskies are back in action this Sunday when they host the UIW Cardinals at 1:00 p.m. at Sorrels Field.
