FRISCO, Texas – HBU senior
Caitlyn Brockway has been voted the 2022 Southland Conference Softball Student-Athlete of the Year with teammates
Sarah Venker and
Jasie Roberts joining her on the Academic All-Conference team.
Brockway earns the league's top academic honor after graduating this spring with a degree in psychology. This marks the third consecutive academic all-conference honor for the senior and comes after a season in which was earned first team all-conference laurels and was also named to the SLC All-Tournament team.
A two-time all-conference performer, Brockway finished third in the league in home runs (9) and slugging percentage (.580). She finished with a .316 batting average and led the Huskies in home runs, RBI (27) and walks (21) and was tied for the team lead in doubles (10). Brockway is now second on HBU's all-time list with 32 career home runs while her 101 career RBI rank eighth in program history.
Joining Brockway in earning first team honors is Venker, a senior nursing major with a perfect 4.0 GPA. Venker was a second team all-SLC selection and was also named to the all-tournament team. She batted .269 for the season and was second on the team with 21 RBI. In the circle, Venker logged 80.2 innings pitched with a 3.64 ERA and recorded a pair of saves. This is Venker's second academic all-conference selection after being named second team last season.
Roberts was selected to the second team for the second-straight season. A biochemistry/molecular biology major, she started every game and finished with a .264 batting average with 22 runs scored, 20 RBI, eight doubles and 13 walks. Defensively, Roberts threw out eight runners on steal attempts, tied for third-best in the conference.
