SB: HCU drops series opener at UIW

Good Friday twin-bill set to start at 4 pm

SAN ANTONIO --- Houston Christian University dropped the series opener to longtime rival University of the Incarnate Word Thursday evening, falling 13-0 to the Cardinals at H-E-B Field. UIW put three runs up in the first frame and never looked back.

After a three-up, three-down top of the first for HCU, UIW's Victoria Altimirano hit the third pitch she saw for a solo homer. That would end up being the only run Bella Mitchell would need on the afternoon, as she set the Huskies down on two hits, walking one and fanning three to improve to 8-4 on the season.

Jade Moreno and Raenna Liscano each went 1-2 for HCU, while Cara Pitman took the loss.

Bryanna Fuentes and Jaisy Caceres led an 11-hit attack for the Cardinals (23-14 / 8-5), each recording a three-hit evening. Fuentes had three runs and four RBI, while Caceras drove in three as well and scored twice.  Altimirano, the Southland Player of the Year the past two seasons, was 2-2 with her 15th homer of the season, four runs scored and three RBI.

HCU falls to 5-28 overall and 2-11 in the Southland. The two teams will finish off the series with a Good Friday doubleheader beginning at 4 pm. Both games can be streamed on ESPN+.
