SB: Huskies clipped by Cardinals in Good Friday twin-bill

HCU returns home next weekend for three-game series against Nicholls

SAN ANTONIO --- Houston Christian University dropped a Good Friday doubleheader in the Alamo City, falling 8-0 and 12-0 to longtime rival University of the Incarnate Word as the Cardinals finished off a three-game sweep.

HCU (5-30 / 2-13 SLC) will return to Husky Field next weekend for a three-game series against Nicholls State University. The Huskies and Colonels begin with a Friday doubleheader starting at 4 pm, to be followed by the series finale at noon on Saturday.

GAME 1

The Cardinals jumped out in front in the bottom of the first with a crooked number. Consecutive singles by Victoria Altamirano and Bryanna Fuentes started the frame, and they were cleared off the bags on a big fly by Jaisy Caceres to deep center field for a 3-0 UIW lead.

The two teams then battled the elements a bit, with two separate lightning delays holding up play. In the fifth, the Cardinals broke the game open with a four-spot with Caceres providing an RBI single and Madison Dorrow adding a two-run single later in the inning.

Altamirano would end things in the bottom of the sixth when she led off with a solo homer, her 16th of the season.

Madison Dominguez went 2-3 for HCU. Leah Hammack went 1-3 at the plate but was saddled with the defeat.

Altamirano went 4-4 with the homer, an RBI and three runs scored, and Caceres went 3-3 with a homer and four RBI to pace the 12-hit offense for UIW. Ava Hernandez (4-2) picked up the victory, allowing just three hits over five innings with six K's.

GAME 2

UIW busted things open with a snowman in the second inning and never looked back. RBI singles by Jasmin Contreras and Ayla Gonzales got the Cards on the board, and Bryanna Fuentes followed them with a three-run double. Sydney Zenon capped the frame with a three-run homer.

Breana Herrera and Heidi Maytum each went 1-2 for the Huskies. Cara Pitman took the loss.

Fuentes went 2-4 with four RBI and Madison Dorrow added a 3-3 outing to back three hurlers who combined on a two-hit shutout. Sam Portillo (4-2) got the win with three innings in the run-rule shortened outing for Incarnate Word (25-14 / 10-5 SLC).
