SB: Huskies earn split of Friday twin-bill with Nicholls

Briseno 4-6 from plate in two games; rubber game of series set for noon Saturday

HOUSTON --- Houston Christian University and Nicholls State University fought the weather for a late start and a late-night finish on Friday evening at Husky Field. The Colonels took game one with a 3-0 shutout but the Huskies took the back-end of the double-dip with a 4-2 victory.

HCU (6-31 / 3-14 SLC) and Nicholls (23-17 / 11-6 SLC) will play the rubber game of the series on Saturday. The game is set for a noon first pitch and can be seen on ESPN+.

GAME 1

Nicholls took the opener by putting up single tallies in the second, third and seventh and riding a strong effort in the circle by Molly Yoo.

Yoo (12-8) went the distance, allowing just five hits and one walk while fanning five. Kayleigh Lugowski homer in the second to give Yoo the only run she really needed, while Reagan Heflin and Erin Krouse each had RBI singles to provide some insurance.

Jocelyn Briseno went 2-3 for HCU. Leah Hammack hurled a gutsy complete game, scattering 11 hits on 101 pitches with two strikeouts.

Krause, Lugowski, Gabby Higbee and Laylin Sturm each had two hits for the Colonels.

GAME 2

HCU bounced back in the second game, doubling up the Colonels 4-2 to snap a nine-game losing streak.

Jocelyn Briseno got the scoring started in the first inning when her single through the left side was misplayed allowing Raenna Liscano to cross the plate with the opening run. Gabby Higbee knotted things up in the fourth with an RBI double to center, but HCU got that run back with an RBI single to left by Heidi Maytum that plated Maddy Bailey for a 2-1 Huskies' lead.

Robledo reached on a fielder's choice that scored Claire Sisco to tie things up again at two-apiece in the top of the fifth, but once again the Huskies came right back. Briseno was hit by a pitch with two outs and Jade Moreno followed with a pinch-hit free pass. Maddy Bailey then singled to center to bring in Briseno for a 3-2 advantage.

In the sixth, HCU tacked on an insurance run. With two outs and the bases juiced, Briseno singled up the middle to bring home Chloe Foster to give the Huskies some breathing room.

Nicholls would put two on with two outs in the top of the seventh, but Addy Prasifka struck out Lugowski to douse the fire and get the Huskies back in the win column.

Briseno and Bailey each went 2-3 with an RBI and a run scored. Heidi Maytum was 1-2 with a walk and an RBI. Prasifka earned the victory, her first of the season, with three innings of relief. She gave up three hits and a run, walking two with four strikeouts.

Claire Sisco and Regan Heflin each had two hits for Nicholls. Sierra Ouellette (4-4) took the loss, going five innings and allowing two earned runs on five hits with five strikeouts.
