SB: Huskies dropped by Colonels in series finale

HCU faces tough road stretch next week with six games over five-day span

HOUSTON --- Houston Christian University dropped the series finale to Nicholls State University on Saturday afternoon, falling 12-1 at Husky Field. The two teams fought through four innings of a pitcher's duel before the Colonels bats got going, taking the lead in the fifth before breaking things open in the seventh to take the series two games to one.

The Huskies took an early lead in the second as Heidi Maytum singled and moved up a base on a wild pitch prior to Karlie Barba doing the same. Chloe Foster then brought home Maytum with a sacrifice fly to right field to give HCU a 1-0 advantage.

In the fifth Nicholls slipped past HCU with two runs. Laylin Sturm scored on a fielder's choice and Claire Sisco later scored on an RBI single by Reagan Helfin that pushed NSU ahead 2-1.

Leading 3-1 heading into the seventh, the Colonels put the game out of reach with a huge uprising, a nine-run outburst that was capped off by a Carmella Muccilli grand slam to left.

Karlie Barba went 2-3 for HCU while Maytum was 1-3 with a run scored. Cara Pitman went five innings and suffered the loss.

Molly Yoo (13-8) won her second game of the series, limiting HCU to just the one run on seven hits. Claire Sisco went 4-4 with two runs and two RBI, while Reagan Heflin went 3-5 with a run and the go-ahead RBI for the Colonels (24-17 | 12-6 SLC).

HCU is now 6-32 overall and 3-15 in the Southland. The Huskies embark on a brutal stretch on the road, as they will play six games over a five-day stretch as the league has its lone mid-week conference series on Tuesday and Wednesday. HCU will travel to Lake Charles, Louisiana for three with McNeese State University before heading up to Commerce to take on East Texas A&M University next weekend.
