HOUSTON – HBU broke a 4-4 tie with a six-run fifth and pounded out 15 hits in a 13-6 victory over UIW in the Southland Conference series opener Friday afternoon at Husky Field.
Junior shortstop
Diego Davila was 4-for-5 with a pair of doubles, two RBIs and two runs, while junior rightfielder
Logan Letney was 3-for-5 with a triple, an RBI and scored three times for the Huskies (16-27, 9-7 SLC). Junior designated hitter
Brennen Bales was 2-for-4 with a home run and scored twice, senior first baseman
Jake Miller was 2-for-5 with a home run, two RBIS and scored twice and junior third baseman
Reed Chumley was 2-for-5 with an RBI and scored twice. Junior centerfielder
Austin Roccaforte reached four times, going 2-for-3 with a walk, a hit by pitch and an RBI and senior second baseman
Braden Sanford scored twice.
Senior lefthander
Austin Spinney (3-3) earned the win, allowing four runs on eight hits with two strikeouts and two walks in five innings.
Alec Carr was a single shy of hitting for the cycle for UIW (16-22, 6-10), going 3-for-4 with a home run, a triple, a double, an RBI and scoring three times. Jimmy DeLeon was 2-for-3 with a double, two RBIs and two runs. Nixon Brannan went 2-for-5.
Michael Garza took the loss (4-4), giving up nine runs, eight earned, on 12 hits with five strikeouts and a walk in four innings.
UIW led 3-0 after a pair of runs in the second, but Miller got HBU's offense started with a solo home run to lead off the second and Roccaforte's RBI single cut the Cardinals' lead to 3-2. Letney's RBI triple in the third tied the game, then Miller's RBI groundout put the HBU ahead, 4-3. The lead was short-lived a Carr led off the fourth with a solo home run to tie the game.
Bales led off the fifth with a solo home run to straight-away center, then Chumley had an RBI single and Davila added an RBI double during the six-run frame.
The series continues with a 1 p.m. first pitch Saturday.
