NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana – The HBU women's basketball team heads to New Orleans on Wednesday to take on the Privateers in the UNO Lakefront Arena.
The Huskies are looking to close out their record season by finishing at the top of the Southland and earning two byes in the conference tournament. Head coach
Donna Finnie has the led the Huskies to their best record this season in her tenure as she looks to pick up her 100
th career win.
HBU (14-9, 10-2 SLC) is coming off of a crazy 18-point comeback against Texas A&M Corpus Christi last Saturday,
Lauryn Mapusua checked into the game for HBU in the second half and jumpstarted the Huskies on both ends of the floor by knocking down free throws, forcing turnovers and taking charges.
Timia Jefferson and
Marilyn Nzoiwu led the Huskies in scoring with 13 points apiece while
Marilyn Nzoiwu picked up another double-double collecting 13 boards.
Kennedy Wilson added 11 points and two assists while
Abbey Sutherland scored seven points and snatched five boards.
Julija Vujakovic had seven points and had both a block and a steal.
New Orleans (3-16, 2-10 SLC) is coming off of a win against Northwestern, 72-64. Jomyra Mathis led four Privateers in double figure with 18 points while collecting seven boards and dishing out four assists.
HBU owns the overall series with New Orleans 6-4. The schools met back in January of this year, a game that saw the Huskies walk away victorious 58-49. In that game, Vujakovic dropped 16 points on 7-10 shooting from the field.
Timia Jefferson and
Kennedy Wilson dropped 14 points and 10 points coming off of the bench for Finnie. Three different Huskies had at least three assists, led by
N'Denasija Collins who had four.
The Huskies return home for their final game of the season on Saturday and will celebrate the HBU careers of
Anna Maguire and
Patience Idoko. HBU will host McNeese at 2 p.m. before turning their attention to the Southland tournament beginning March 10
th
