HOUSTON – The HBU women's basketball team is set for an exciting matchup as they host the top-ranked Southeastern Lions on Saturday for a 2 p.m. tip in Sharp Gym.
The game between the Huskies (9-8, 5-1 SLC) and the Lions (10-6, 6-0 SLC) will be aired live on ESPN+ with play-by-play from Garrett Jones and color commentary from Hall of Fame head coach Van Chancellor.
The Huskies are coming off of an impressive win against the Northwestern Lady Demons Thursday night. Strong defense and a 23-2 run led to a 66-51 Husky win. In the contest,
Timia Jefferson led four Huskies in double figures with 17 points.
Marilyn Nzoiwu and
Kennedy Wilson each added 14 points while
Julija Vujakovic tacked on 13 and added a team high two blocks. As a unit, the Huskies forced 22 Lady Demon turnovers, led by three steals from Wilson and Jefferson.
N'Denasija Collins is second in scoring averaging 10.9 points per game and shooting at a 47.7 percent clip while knocking down 37.5 percent of her threes all while averaging 7.5 boards per game. HBU has knocked down 39-47 free throw attempts during their current win streak and is shooting 78.6 percent from the charity strip for the season.
Southeastern is coming off a nail-biter win over the McNeese Cowgirls, winning 69-68 on an and-one layup from Morgan Davis with just 20 seconds remaining in the game. Northwestern's scoring is spread out across their entire roster, with three Lions averaging eight points. Cailyn Williams leads the team, averaging 8.9 points per game, followed by Hailey Girartano and Davis, averaging 8.3 and 8.0 points respectively.
HBU will look to end their four game skid against the Lions which dates back to the 2016-17 season. The schools last meeting came in the 2019-20 season which saw the Lions take a 69-59 win in Sharp Gym.
The Huskies next three games will be on the road, the first contest is against Northwestern State on Thursday in Natchitoches, Louisiana.
