HOUSTON – The HBU women's basketball team is ready for a clash against the Corpus Christi Islanders at 2 p.m. Saturday afternoon in Sharp Gym.
The Huskies (13-9, 9-2 SLC) and Islanders (17-8, 9-2) currently sit tied a-top the Southland Conference standings with just three games left to decide who earns the top seed heading into the tournament.
HBU is coming off of an up and down game against the UIW Cardinals which saw them trail early before jumping out to a 16-point lead. The Cardinals were able to cut the HBU lead down to one late in the fourth before clutch buckets from several Huskies put the game out of reach. The Huskies earned their fourth consecutive win and their seventh win in their last eight appearances on the hardwood.
The Islanders are coming off of a loss against McNeese, which allowed HBU to pull even with them in the standings. Corpus' only other conference loss of the year came against Southeastern, a game they lost by just five.
So far this season, Timia Jefferson and N'Denasija Collins lead the Huskies in scoring with 12.9 and 10.5 points respectively. Marilyn Nzoiwu leads the team in rebounding, collecting seven per game. Julija Vujakovic leads HBU on defense with a team high 42 steals while also adding 10 blocks. Enya Maguire and Kennedy Wilson are tied for the team lead in assists with 44 each. Abbey Sutherland and Nzoiwu have combined to swat away 51 opponents' shots.
HBU and TAMCC met early on in the conference schedule and the Islanders won, 57-44. Kennedy Wilson led the Huskies in scoring with 11 points while Collins and Lauryn Mapusua each had seven. For the Islanders, Makinna Serrata led three Islanders in double-figures with 20 points. Overall, the Huskies have a 7-13 record against the Islanders. Texas A&M Corpus has won the last two meetings and five of the last six.
The Huskies hit the road next week for a rare Wednesday night game against New Orleans before returning home for Senior Day against McNeese.
