THIBODAUX, LA –
Enya Maguire led three Huskies in double figures with 14 points in a Southland Conference women's basketball game against the Nicholls Colonels Saturday afternoon.
HBU (12-9, 8-2 SLC) shot it well from all over the floor, shooting 37 percent as a team from the field and 40 percent from deep. Their defense played just as well, holding the Colonels (4-17, 2-8 SLC) to just 33 percent shooting from the floor and forcing misses on all six of their three point attempts.
The first half was tightly contested as neither side led by more than three possessions. Maguire and
Julija Vujakovic got the scoring started for the Huskies, making layups on the Huskies first two possessions. Both teams exchanged buckets before
N'Denasija Collins and Vujakovic combined to score eight of HBU's final 10 points to end the quarter.
Both teams struggled finding the bucket early in the second quarter. With a five point lead and six minutes remaining in the first half, the Huskies would make buckets on three of their next four possessions to push their lead to nine. Nicholls responded well, cutting into the Husky lead over the remaining three minutes, forcing four consecutive HBU misses from the field. HBU took a 25-21 lead into the half.
Nicholls came out of the locker room and quickly tied the game at 25, scoring on each of their first two possessions, but back-to-back Maguire threes would push the Huskies back out front. Both teams shot the ball extremally well over the last seven minutes of the third, and the Huskies would take a 45-39 lead into the fourth.
HBU stepped it up defensively in the final period, holding the Colonels to just 3-13 shooting from the field. On the offensive end of the court HBU was dropping in jumpers at a 43 percent clip. They held off the Nicholls offense long enough at took home the win 61-51.
The in means the Huskies have swept their Louisiana road trip over the last week and a half. In the contest, Maguire led HBU scorers with 14, Vujakovic had 12, and Collins had 10. The Huskies were very active on the glass, with four players tallying at least five boards.
Timia Jefferson had seven points while
Kennedy Wilson returned from injury to score six points for head coach
Donna Finnie and the Huskies.
Abbey Sutherland had six points and six rebounds.
After the game Finnie said, "I am glad we managed to pull out the win because Nicholls, as always, played so hard for 40-minutes. It is not an easy place to play but I am pleased we managed to execute down the stretch and finish this road stretch with the win."
The Huskies return home next week for a pair of Southland Conference matchups. They host UIW Thursday night in Sharp Gym before hosting TAMCC on Saturday.
