AUSTIN, Texas – The HCU women's basketball team lost their final non-conference game of the season against the Texas Longhorns Wednesday afternoon inside the Moody Center. Houston Christian University (HCU), formerly Houston Baptist University (HBU), underwent a name change in September 2022.
HCU (5-6) fell behind early to Texas (7-4) following a quick turnaround from a game against Texas State the night before. The Longhorns jumped out to a 9-0 lead, knocking down four of their first five shots through the first two minutes of the game and outscored the Huskies 23-6 in the first quarter.
HCU's offense was held to just two made shots in the second quarter however their defense held Texas to just 5-of-17 shooting (27 percent) and forced three turnovers.
UT started the second half on a 5-0 run before
Julija Vujakovic answered with a mid-range jumper. Following a pair of layups from Texas,
N'Denasija Collins and
Kennedy Wilson knocked down one and two free throws respectively to kick start a Huskies 7-2 run. The Longhorns however were lights out from the floor in the third and took a 71-21 lead into the fourth and won 96-34.
Wilson led the Huskies in scoring with seven points.
Jo Oly finished with a team high five boards while Vujakovic dished out a team high five assists.
DeYona Gaston led all scorers and five Longhorns in double-digits with 20 points and gathered eight rebounds. Khadija Faye finished with a double-double, 16 points and 11 rebounds.
The Huskies begin their Southland Conference title defense on New Year's Eve against the New Orleans Privateers in Sharp Gym.
