LUBBOCK, Texas – The non-conference portion of the 2022-23 schedule comes to an end on Wednesday afternoon for the HCU men's basketball team when the Huskies take on Texas Tech at United Supermarkets Arena at 1:00 p.m. Houston Christian University (HCU), formerly Houston Baptist University (HBU), underwent a name change in September 2022.
The Huskies (3-9) are coming off a 100-90 road loss to UT Rio Grande Valley this past Sunday. Senior
Maks Klanjscek matched his season-high with 21 points for HCU while
Brycen Long and
Bonke Maring each scored 16. Long also matched his career-high with six assists. Freshman
Pierce Bazil scored 12 off the bench.
Maring, a 6-10 senior center, currently leads all Southland Conference players and ranks 32
nd nationally with a 61.4 percent (78-of-127) field goal percentage and his 78 made field goals is the 37
th-highest total in the country. Maring is averaging 19 point per game over his last four games. Long has knocked down 34 three-pointers this season, the 36
th-most nationally, and has now made 121 for his career at HCU. He stands in 12
th on the program's all-time made threes list and is just 16 away from entering the top-10.
Texas Tech (8-2) has won its last four games, including a 102-52 win over Jackson State in Houston at Delmar Fieldhouse on Saturday, Dec. 17, as part of the HBCU Roundball Classic. The Red Raiders have played a pair of fellow Southland Conference opponents, defeating Nicholls 78-71 earlier in the month and downing Northwestern State, 73-49, to open the season.
Senior Kevin Obanor leads Texas Tech with 15.3 points per game and is second on the team averaging 5.8 rebounds per game. Obanor is shooting 52.9 percent (55-of-104) from the field. HCU faced Obanor back in 2019 when he was a sophomore at Oral Roberts in a game ORU won 95-81 but the Huskies held Obanor to just four points.
As a team, the Red Raiders are out-scoring opponents by 14.9 ppg and limiting their opposition to just 39.9 percent from the floor and 31.6 percent from the beyond the arc.
The last time the Huskies and Red Raiders played was on Nov. 13, 2019 in Midland, Texas at Midland College. The 11
th-ranked Red Raider defeated HCU 103-74 but the Huskies' 74 points was the fifth-highest point total by an opposing team vs. Texas Tech that season.
Southland Conference play opens for the Huskies on Friday, Dec. 30, at 7:00 p.m. in Sharp Gym with the New Orleans Privateers coming to town.
