HOUSTON – The HCU women's basketball team opens up their season with a home matchup against the University of the Southwest Mustangs Monday night in Sharp Gym. Houston Christian University (HCU), formerly Houston Baptist University (HBU), underwent a name change in September 2022.

The Huskies (0-0, 0-0 SLC) are coming off a record setting season which saw them win the Southland Conference regular season title and play in the WNIT, both firsts in the history of the program. The 2021-22 women's team was the first program at HCU to win the regular season title since the school joined division I in 2013.

Head coach Donna Finnie brings back the core unit of last year's squad with the likes of preseason first-team selection Kennedy Wilson, second-team selection Julija Vujakovic. N'Denasija Collins, along with Enya Maguire, Lauryn Mapusua, Abbey Sutherland, and '21-22 all-defensive team member Marilyn Nzoiwu.

Additions to the team are Erin Maguire, Jo Oly, Quincy Erickson, Emelie Ezukanma, and Cat Hursh.

HCU and the USW Mustangs (0-1, 0-0 RRAC) have met one time prior to Monday's matchup. In 2018 the Huskies took down the Mustangs 100-57 behind a 38-point 3rd quarter from the team. Then freshman Vujakovic and Nzoiwu combined for 19 points, 10 rebounds, and five assists in 42 minutes off of the bench.

Abigail Olivas is the top returner for the Mustangs this season. She averaged 17.8 minutes played across 24 games (14 starts). She shot 36 percent from the field and 33 percent from deep. She was also able to knock down an impressive 80 percent of her opportunities at the charity stripe.

The game can be viewed on ESPN+. Tipoff scheduled for 6:00 p.m. with play by play analysis from Chase Hernandez and commentary from Women's Basketball Hall of Fame and Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame coach Van Chancellor.
