HOUSTON – HCU women's basketball returns home following a four-game road trip to battle against the UTRGV Vaqueros in Sharp Gym Thursday night. Houston Christian University (HCU), formerly Houston Baptist University (HBU), underwent a name change in September 2022. The game can be watched on ESPN+ with play-by-play from Garrett Jones and commentary from Hall-of-Fame coach Van Chancellor.

N'Denasija Collins and Abbey Sutherland were named to the all-tournament team following great showings at the University of Denver Classic last weekend. Collins was named tournament MVP, leading HCU (3-2) to wins over Denver and Yale, averaging 15 ppg and shooting 60 percent from the field. Kennedy Wilson helped ignite the Husky offense against the Yale Bulldogs, leading the offense with 20 points, 17 coming in the second half.

The Vaqueros (3-3) are coming off an overtime win against Texas A&M Corpus Christi. Iyana Dorsey, UTRGV's leading scorer, finished that game with 30 points, 14 of which came from the foul line.

In addition to Dorsey's scoring for UTRGV, Mele Kailahi and Deborah Ogayemi are each averaging over 11 points. Ogayemi also leads the team in rebounding, grabbing 8.3 per game.

HCU has never beaten UTRGV dating back to 2011. Their most recent matchup came last season in Edinburg where the Huskies were defeated 67-58. Collins and Marilyn Nzoiwu each had double-doubles in that game. Collins had 22 points and 11 boards while Nzoiwu had 10 points and 14 boards.

This season, Collins and Julija Vujakovic lead the Huskies offense averaging 14.4 and 13.4 points respectively. Nzoiwu is the team leading in rebounds averaging 6.6 this season while Wilson has a team high 16 assists. Enya Maguire and Jo Oly are averaging a combined 10 points off the bench.

The Huskies head to Waco this weekend to take on the 21st ranked Baylor Bears Sunday afternoon.
