DENVER, Co. – The HCU women's basketball team is heading to Denver post-Turkey Day to play in the University of Denver Classic Friday and Saturday afternoon in Magness Arena. Houston Christian University (HCU), formerly Houston Baptist University (HBU), underwent a name change in September 2022.

HCU (1-2) is coming off of back-to-back losses against No. 22 Nebraska and the nation's number one offense in No. 15 LSU. Still, the Huskies saw impressive performances from Julija Vujakovic, Marilyn Nzoiwu and N'Denasija Collins in those contests.

Vujakovic scored in double figures in both of those games including dropping a team-high 18 against the Tigers. Collins and Nzoiwu performed well against the Cornhuskers. Collins stuffed the stat sheet with 14 points and six boards while shooting 60 percent from distance and Nzoiwu had her first double-double of the year to the tune of 10 points and 13 rebounds.

Denver (1-3) has played close games so far this year, dropping their first two matchups to Air Force and Northern Colorado before picking up their lone win on the year in overtime against Loyola Marymount. Most recently they dropped a game against Wyoming. Emma Smith leads the Pioneers in scoring, averaging 12.7 points per game. Mikayla Minett is averaging a double-double, with 10 points and 10 assists per game.

Yale (3-2) stumbled out of the gate with losses to Fordham and Saint Joseph's before picking up three consecutive victories against Fairfield, Army, and Maine. Elles van der Maas leads Yale in scoring with
13.3 points per game. Jenna Clark, their primary ball handler who has totaled 27 assists this year, is the only other Bulldog averaging double-figures scoring at 11.6 points per game.

This marks the first time that the Huskies will take the court against both Denver and Yale. So far this season Collins leads HCU in scoring 14.2 points while Vujakovic pours in 12.7. Enya Maguire and Jo Oly combine for just under 11 points off of the bench for coach Finnie. Nzoiwu averages seven points and seven rebounds. As a team the Huskies are shooting 36 percent from the field, 38 percent from deep, and 77 percent from the charity stripe.

The Huskies finally return home to Sharp Gym following the Denver Classic to host UTRGV on December 1st.
