HOUSTON – The HCU men's basketball team will be playing three games in four days as part of the Rice Owl Invitational with a pair of home games in Sharp Gym on Friday and Saturday against Western Michigan and Georgia Southern followed by the
Darius Lee Memorial Classic against the Owls at Tudor Fieldhouse on Monday. Houston Christian University (HCU), formerly Houston Baptist University (HBU), underwent a name change in September 2022.
The Huskies (1-2) racked up 119 points this past Monday, earning a 119-97 win over Champion Christian. Six different players scored in double-figures for HCU with senior post Bonke Maring erupting for a career-high 27 points on 12-of-14 shooting. Maring now leads the team in scoring for the season, averaging 13 points per game with four other players all averaging at least 10 ppg.
Western Michigan (1-2), under first year head coach Dwayne Stephens, come into Friday's game off an 81-65 loss at Valparaiso this past Sunday. The Broncos are led by senior guard Lamar Norman Jr. who is scoring 16.7 ppg and shooting 32 percent (8-of-25) from three. Tray Maddox Jr. is averaging 10.3 ppg while junior forward Markeese Hastings leads the team on the boards with 8.3 rebounds per game and 8.3 ppg.
Georgia Southern (1-2) will face Rice (1-2) on Friday before facing the Huskies on Saturday. The Eagles picked up their first win of the season on Saturday, defeating Trinity Baptist 53-32. Senior forward Andrei Savrasov leads GSU with 12.3 ppg and 7.3 rpg, shooting 48.4 percent (15-of-31) from the floor. Fifth-year guard Jalen Finch is second with 10.7 ppg.
Rice will play GSU and WMU on Friday and Saturday before the Huskies travel across town to Tudor Fieldhouse for the
Darius Lee Memorial Classic on Monday. The Owls dropped their last game, a Conference USA matchup on the road at Middle Tennessee, by a final score of 81-46. Forward Seryee Lewis scored 14 points on 7-of-8 shooting in his first appearance for the Owls in their last game while guard Travis Evee leads the team with 16 ppg.
Friday will mark the first-ever meeting between the Huskies and Broncos while Saturday's game will be a meeting of former Trans America Athletic Conference rivals with Georgia Southern holding a 14-6 advantage in the all-time series. HCU is 3-12 all-time against the Owls.

The Huskies hit the road for a post-Thanksgiving matchup in Columbia, Mo. against the Missouri Tigers at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 26, before returning home for four consecutive home games.
