WSOC: HCU Returns to its Winning Ways, Downs McNeese on the Road

Junior Katie Marker scores her fifth goal of the season

LAKE CHARLES, La. – HCU junior Katie Marker scored the lone goal of the match in the 22nd minute as the Huskies earned a 1-0 Southland Conference road victory over the McNeese Cowgirls on Friday evening. Houston Christian University (HCU), formerly Houston Baptist University (HBU), underwent a name change in September 2022.

The Huskies (4-7-3, 4-3-1 SLC) and Cowgirls (4-6-4, 2-3-4 SLC) played a tightly contested match with HCU holding a slim 11-10 advantage in shot attempts. HCU put six attempts on goal to McNeese's four.

Emily Jaimes put a shot on target in the sixth minute and Kiana Kukaua had an early attempt on goal for the Cowgirls. In the 22nd minute, Marker found the net with an assist from Evelyn Slaughter for the game-winner.

Senior Talin Rizo had a pair of shot attempts, both on goal, while Juliana Anchondo and Felicia Hernandez each also had shots on goal. Chloe Bagshaw recorded shutout number five of the season, registering four saves. The redshirt freshman's five shutouts are tied for the fourth-most in a single season in program history.

The Huskies saw a four-match unbeaten streak of three wins and a tie snapped last Sunday. They have now totaled 13 points and are in a three-way tie for third place in the league standings

HCU will play its final road game of the season this Sunday, Oct. 16, in Hammond, La. against the Southeastern Lady Lions at 1:00 p.m.
