HAMMOND, La. – HCU women's soccer continued its run of good form on Sunday afternoon at Strawberry Stadium, downing the Southeastern Lady Lions by a 2-0 margin to move to 5-0-0 against teams from the state of Louisiana this season. Houston Christian University (HCU), formerly Houston Baptist University (HBU), underwent a name change in September 2022.
Evelyn Slaughter made a dangerous run at the goal for the Huskies (5-7-3, 5-3-1 SLC) within the first five minutes, going one-on-one with the keeper but Olivia Griffin came out and took away the angle to make the save for SLU (5-5-3, 3-3-3 SLC).
Chloe Bagshaw made a pair of saves in the first half to help send the game into the half tied 0-0.
In the second half, it took
Mia Salas just 1:14 to find the net. The junior took a shot from well outside the 18-yard box and her attempt to the bottom left corner hit the hands of a diving Griffin in goal and popped over the keeper and went into the goal.
Kat Lazor was credited with an assist. Just over a minute later, after a Southeastern corner kick, Bagshaw made a save on a close shot off the foot of Emma Jones. HCU got its insurance goal in the 69
th minute when
Emily Jaimes scored from a tough angle with assists from both
Evelyn Slaughter and
Katie Marker.
Salas and Jaimes each have three goals on the season now with Salas's goal her second game-winner of the year. Bagshaw totaled six saves in goal for shutout number six on the season, tying her for third-most in a single season in program history. As a team, the Huskies are tied for the league lead with five shutouts in conference play.
The Huskies are currently tied for third place in the conference with 16 points, one point behind second place Northwestern State and six points behind league-leading Lamar.
