HOUSTON –The HBU women's basketball team hosts the Nicholls Colonels at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday in Sharp Gym, for the Southland Conference Women's Basketball Game of the Week, featured on ESPN+.

The Huskies (7-8, 3-1 SLC) are riding their best start in conference play ever under head coach Donna Finnie, most recently beating New Orleans, 58-49. Currently tied for second in the conference, the Huskies have recently seen great offensive performances from Julija Vujakovic (16 points against New Orleans), Timia Jefferson who is averaging 15.25 over her last four games, N'Denasija Collins who is averaging 12.5 points and 9.8 rebounds over her last four games, and Kennedy Wilson, averaging 10.5 points and three assists over her last two outings.

Their last time on the floor saw the Huskies lose a 12 point lead to the New Orleans Privateers in the third quarter. The Huskies used a timeout with just under five minutes to play in the third to regroup. Coming out of the timeout, they went on a 17-2 run to close out the third quarter and into the start of the fourth quarter. The lead that they eventually stretched to 15 proved to be too much for the Privateers to overcome and the Huskies walked away with the win.

Nicholls (3-12, 1-3 SLC) comes into the game on a three game losing streak to Northwestern State, Southeastern, and McNeese. They won their opening Southland matchup in a nail biter against New Orleans, 69-68.

The Huskies have won the last two matchups against the Colonels, both coming in the 2021 season. This marked the first time the Huskies took down the Colonels since the 2016 season. Nicholls is ahead in the all-time series, 9-4.

For the season, the Colonels are led on offense by Chelsea Cain, averaging 16.1 points per game, and Chyna Allen, averaging 13.9 points per game. Cain won SLC Player of the Week honors for the week of Jan. 17.

Jefferson leads the Huskies in scoring, averaging 13.8 points per game while Collins follows her at 12.1 points per game to go along with her team high 8.3 rebounds per game. Marilyn Nzoiwu leads the Huskies with 22 blocked shots with Abbey Sutherland following closely behind with 17.

The Huskies remain home next week to close out their four game homestand, when they host Northwestern State and Southeastern on Thursday and Saturday respectively.

Classroom Champion
As part of ESPN+ Southland Game of the Week, each team will feature a classroom champion. This week the Huskies will feature senior center, Marilyn Nzoiwu. Nzoiwu has a 4.0 GPA and is working towards earning her masters in psychology. She has been named three times to the SLC Commissioners Honor Roll, is a four-time member of the HBU Dean's List, is the HBU women's basketball representative on the HBU student-athlete advisory committee, and is the chair for the African Student Association on campus.
