HOUSTON – Rice scored early before building its lead to two in the first half with the HBU women's soccer team unable to get on the board, dropping a 2-0 non-conference decision to the Owls on Thursday evening at Holloway Field.
Rice (7-2-0) got on the scoreboard quickly with a Mikala Furuto goal in the third minute. The Huskies' (2-9-1) got their first look on a
Bryce Reynolds attempt off a corner kick but Rice's Bella Killgore made the save in the eighth minute.
Just over a minute later,
Mia Salas hit the crossbar for another close call for HBU. Salas put another shot on target at the 31:30 mark and a little more than a minute later Delaney Schultz found the net to put the Owls ahead 2-0. Rice then put four shots on goal in the second half but
Talin Rizo was up the task to keep the HBU deficit at two.
Rizo, in her first time in goal for the Huskies, made six saves on the evening with Rice attempting a total of 18 shots to HBU's nine. Rice held a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks.
The Huskies return to Southland Conference play on Thursday, Apr. 1, when they head to Louisiana to face Southeastern Louisiana in Hammond at 7:00 p.m. followed by Nicholls in Thibodaux on Saturday, Apr. 3, at 3:00 p.m.
