HOUSTON – In a game in which good looks at the goal were hard to come by, it was SFA that emerged with a 1-0 win in a Sunday afternoon matchup with the HBU women's soccer team at Sorrels Field.
The first half saw just five shot attempts between the two teams with SFA (7-5-2, 5-3-0 SLC) putting the lone shot on goal. It appeared as though HBU (2-8-1, 2-6-0 SLC) had conceded a goal at one point before it was called off due to a handball call that had initially been missed, leaving things even at 0-0 at the half.
The offensive action picked up in the second period with HBU's
Megan Rickert and
Xya Balderas testing SFA goalkeeper Madeline Talbot in the 56
th and 61
st minutes but Talbot came up with both saves.
Karla Ramirez came up with a great save on a well struck ball by Katelyn Termini in the 76
th minute but the SFA breakthrough came less than three minutes later. Caylon McMillan played a through ball that Destiny Dixon was able to chase down and break past Ramirez to score on an open net at the 77:56 mark.
HBU earned a corner in the 88
th minute with
Ryan Ford's service into the box finding
Avery Cortez who headed it to
Noor Abukishk for a shot but the senior's attempt missed just a bit right.
Shots were even with both team's attempting nine but SFA held a 5-2 advantage in shots on goal. The Huskies earned six corners to SFA's one.
HBU will play its final four games away from home with the first coming on Thursday, Mar. 25, across town at Rice at 7:00 p.m.
