WSOC: Late Free Kick Downs HBU vs. Sam Houston

The Huskies will play their home finale on Sunday

HOUSTON – HBU fell behind in the second half before a Tayah Reynolds goal evened the score 12 minutes later but the Huskies ultimately lost their Southland Conference women's soccer matchup to visiting Sam Houston by a 2-1 margin on Friday evening at Sorrels Field.

HBU (2-7-1, 2-5-0 SLC) was the more active offensive team in the first half with six shot attempts to the Bearkats' (2-4-1, 2-4-1 SLC) three with neither team registering a shot on goal. The Huskies earned four corners in the first period while not allowing SHSU a single one.

The first shot attempt on goal happened to be the first goal with SHSU's Ashley Friedrichs scoring from outside the 18-yard box with an assist from Brooke Jones in the 59th minute. The Huskies then picked it up with four shots on target in the next 11 minutes but were unable to find the net. That changed when Reynolds intercepted an errant pass, dribble forward and let fly from 25 yards out and beat a diving keeper, finding the net just under the crossbar in the 71st minute to even the score.

The final goal came on a free kick from near midfield with a little over three minutes left in regulation. Katarina Baehren's kick appeared like it was going to be controlled in the box by teammate Jade Dewbre but she let it past and it bounced past an outstretched Karla Ramirez.

Reynolds' goal was the first of her career, giving HBU two consecutive games with a senior scoring her first career goal. HBU held a 17-10 advantage in shot attempts and earned seven corners to SHSU's three.

The Huskies will play their final home game this Sunday, Mar. 21, afternoon when they host Stephen F. Austin at 1:00 p.m.
