CORPUS CHRISTI – Hosting team A&M-Corpus Christi stormed out the start of the game to gain a big lead and although the Huskies fought to inch back in, the Islanders were able keep the lead the remainder of the game to capture to the 50-43 victory in the Dugan Wellness center on Monday evening.
Kennedy Wilson led with 14 points on the night with nine of them scored in the second half surge from the Huskies (9-9,5-6 SLC) and added four steals. Timia Jefferson continued her streak of double-digits points with 11 going 3-of-11 from the floor and 5-for-7 at the line while also having three steals on the night. The pair's steals contributed to the Islanders' (6-11,4-5 SLC) 14 turnovers. Marilyn Nzoiwu had her season high 14 rebounds with 11 boards from N'Denasija Collins out of the teams 37.
The Huskies had a quick 4-2 lead until the Islanders took control going 8-of-16 from the field gaining a 14-point lead with two minutes left in the first with HBU going only 3-of-14 on the floor. HBU inched in to only down by seven in the second and with a three from Makinna Serrata to put the Islanders up by 11, Nzowui put a layup on to go into the half down 20-29.
Patience Idoko began the second half with a jump shot for her eighth point but the Islanders pushed back up by 13 to force an HBU timeout. With four free throws, a Jefferson pull up jump shot off a turnover and a Wilson layup, the Huskies trailed by only five after a heavy period of turnovers from the Islanders. Wilson posted a three pointer with a little over five and a half minutes remaining, but the Islanders got back up by eight. The teams went back and forth in the final minutes and with a couple free throws, A&M-Corpus went up by 10. With a final and-one from Jefferson, the Islanders claimed the game.
Three Islanders were in double-digit points with Serrata and Alecia Westbrooke just two rebounds shy each from a double-double. The Huskies shot 24.1 percent from the field to the Islanders 35.2 percent but ultimately struggled going 12-for-21 at the line to the Islanders 10-for-13. A&M-Corpus Christi outrebound HBU 45-to-37 but committed 14 turnovers to the Huskies nine.
The Huskies will head to San Antonio for their first meeting against Incarnate Word on Wednesday, March 3 at 6:30 p.m. in the McDermott Center with their final game at home on Saturday, March 6 at 22 p.m. in a rematch to the Islanders in Sharp Gym.
