BEAUMONT – Starting the first period with only two Huskies contributing eight points and a struggle to fight back in from the 11-point deficit at the half, the Cardinals were able to surge past HBU in the third putting them up by 26 and finished with an 83-54 victory at the Montagne Center in Beaumont, Texas on Saturday afternoon.
Lamar (6-11,5-4 SLC) quickly pressured the Huskies (7-7,3-4 SLC) getting a 15-5 lead within the first eight minutes of the game. The Cardinal scored eight of their 17 points in the first period from second chance points after outrebounding the Huskies 16-to-8. The Huskies scored 18 points in the second period, their highest on the game, to inch in a little closer being down 26-37 going into the half. With the five-minute mark hitting in the third period, Lamar cruised into 26-point lead to end the period. After back-and-forth points from both teams and the Cardinals getting up by 32 for the highest lead of the night, the Huskies broke the 50 points mark but couldn't stop Lamar from the 29-point victory.
HBU was led by another stellar night from Timia Jefferson with 17 points and tied her career high of seven rebounds. Kennedy Wilson and Julija Vujakovic both added 10 points while Patience Idoko added nine points and led with nine rebounds. The Huskies shot 30 percent from the field and went 61.9 percent from the line. The bench had 12 points and the team totaled 30 rebounds.
Lamar was led by Bebe Galloway and Micaela Wilson who both held a double-double with 24 points with 12 rebounds from Wilson and 13 from Galloway. Jayden Pimentel added night points and contributed six assists. The Cardinals outrebound the Huskies with 49 and shot 51.6 percent from the field and 71.4 percent from the line. The bench scored 20 points on the game and the team had 20 points from second chance.
The Huskies will next see action on Wednesday, Feb. 17 for a 5:30 p.m. tip-off with a trip to Abilene Christian.
