FORT WORTH, Texas – The HBU women's basketball team officially kicks off their season in Schollmaier Arena on the campus of TCU against the Horned Frogs Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday's game will air live on ESPN plus.
The Huskies head into the season returning all five starters and the majority of their bench unit. Juniors
Timia Jefferson and
Kennedy Wilson were voted to the First and Second Team All-Conference respectively. Jefferson is coming off of a season in which she averaged 15 points per game with 52 assists and 52 steals. Wilson is coming off of a season which saw her average 10.5 points per game while shooting 38% from the field, 37% from three, and totaled 77 assists.
Other key returners include junior
N'Denasija Collins who started 17 games for the Huskies and averaged 10.1 points per game as a sophomore along with a team high 159 rebounds. Senior
Julija Vujakovic started 19 games for the Huskies and averaged 9.3 points per game while shooting 33% from deep while shooting 39% from the field.
Marilyn Nzoiwu started in 13 games and appeared in 21 for the Huskies averaging 21.6 minutes per game.
Anna Maguire and
Enya Maguire appeared in 14 and 17 games respectively.
Newcomers include freshman
Amy Cotton, freshman
Felicity Hilford, freshman
Elizabeth Matadi, and senior transfer
Lauryn Mapusua.
This is head coach
Donna Finnie's ninth season at the helm of the women's basketball program. Next to her on the bench are returning assistant coaches
Becca Allison and
Taylor Stahly along with new assistant coach
Kacie Cryer.
TCU returns all five starters from last season and are led by Lauren Herd. She was was the only Horned Frog to average double-digit points last season with 21.2 and led the team in rebounding with 7.1 per game along with 121 assists and 64 steals. TCU is balanced across their classifications with three graduate students, five seniors, two juniors, three sophomore and four freshman.
This will be the fourth ever meeting between the Huskies and the Horned Frogs, the last coming in 2014 when TCU beat HBU 87-64. TCU leads the all-time series record 3-0.
The Huskies home opener is Sunday at 2:00 p.m. when they host St. Thomas (TX) in Sharp Gym.
