WSOC: HBU Blanks the Islanders, 2-0

Hernandez and Balderas find the net for the Huskies

HOUSTON – HBU continued its recent impressive run on the pitch on Thursday evening with a 2-0 Southland Conference victory over visiting Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at Sorrels Field with goals from Felicia Hernandez and Xya Balderas with goalkeeper Karla Ramirez earning the shutout win.

The Huskies' (3-7-3, 3-2-2 SLC) game-winner from Hernandez came in the 37th minute after both teams totaled 13 shots up to that point with the Islanders (4-7-2, 2-3-2 SLC) putting three attempts on target to HBU's one. Hernandez's first collegiate goal came after senior defender Bryce Reynolds played a ball forward and wide right to Mia Salas who chased it down and crossed it into the 18-yard box where Hernandez redirected it inside the left post, sending the Huskies into the half leading 1-0.

In the second half, sophomores Katie Marker and Caroline Havard both had near misses to the left and the Huskies finished the second period with six shots on goal to TAMUCC's one. HBU earned some breathing room when a cross from Lauren Avila was initially stopped by the Islander keeper but she lost her handle on it, allowing Noor Abukishk to set up Balderas in front of the goal at the 87:03 mark.

The two goals were both firsts of the season for Hernandez and Balderas while Abukishk and Reynolds each now have three assists. Salas' assist was her second of the season. In goal, Ramirez picked up the shutout victory with four saves.

The Huskies out-shot the visitors 18-13 and put nine shots on goal to the Islanders' four.

HBU is now unbeaten in its last three matches and 3-1-1 over the last five.

The Huskies will be on the road for their next four games beginning this Sunday, Oct. 10, with a trip to San Antonio, Texas to face UIW at 1:00 p.m.
