WSOC: HBU Tames the Lady Lions, 2-1

Felicia Hernandez and Katie Marker erase an early 1-0 deficit to take down SLU

HAMMOND, La. – The HBU women's soccer team found itself in a 1-0 hole less than four minutes into play but earned a big 2-1 Southland Conference road win over Southeastern on Sunday afternoon at Strawberry Stadium.

The Lady Lions (5-7-2, 3-4-2 SLC) struck quickly with Mya Guillory finding the net in the fourth minute on the very first shot of the match with an assist from Victoria Brackmann. Just over two minutes later it was Mia Salas putting the first shot of the game for HBU (5-8-3, 5-3-2 SLC) on target with the SLU keeper making the stop.  Then, in the ninth minute with the Huskies controlling possession on their attacking half, a wide ball out to Salas was then crossed into the 18 yard box off a Lady Lion defender and right to Noor Abukishk whose quick pass set up Felicia Hernandez for the tying goal.

As the first half wore on, both teams had opportunities but it took until the 34th minute for the Huskies to find the net for what proved to be the game-winner. Ariana King settled a ball near midfield and quickly played it forward through a pair of defenders with Katie Marker making a run and quickly firing past the keeper for the lead.

After a first half in which HBU took nine shots to SLU's three, it was flipped in the second half with Southeastern on the offensive. The Lady Lions took nine shots with three on goal but HBU keeper Karla Ramirez made three stops to maintain the lead and the three points.

The Huskies' two goals mark the first time a team has scored multiple goals in a game against Southeastern since a 3-2 loss on Sep. 3. Marker's goal was her third of the season and she now leads the Huskies with 11 points. Hernandez, meanwhile, now has two goals in her freshman campaign with both coming in the last four games. It was the first assist of the year for King and the fourth for Abukishk. Ramirez finished the afternoon with four saves the win in the goal.

Shots were even at 12 for each squad with the Huskies holding the advantage in shots on goal with eight to SLU's five. The Lady Lions earned six corner kicks on the day while HBU didn't have a single one.

HBU has one more road game ahead in the 2021 season, visiting Lake Charles, La. to take on McNeese on Friday, Oct. 22, before closing the regular season at home against Northwestern State for Senior Night on Tuesday, Oct. 26, at 7:00 p.m. at Sorrels Field.
