WBB: Huskies Post Home Victory Over Nicholls, 70-61

Jefferson, Wilson record career highs in scoring

HOUSTON – The Huskies held the lead from the start to finish with a 70-61 victory over the Nicholls Colonels on Saturday, Jan. 30. Two Huskies posted career high points with three players in double digits. 

HBU (6-4,2-1 SLC) ended the first period with a 15-10 lead after a strong opening seven-point performance from Kennedy Wilson and five from Timia Jefferson. The Huskies pushed an eight-point lead in the second with a three-pointer from Jefferson. Nicholls (6-5,5-3 SLC) tried to close in with 13 points total, but with back-to-back layups from Naomi Pierce and Patience Idoko, HBU maintained a 29-23 lead going into the half.  

Pierce forced two turnovers to begin the third and a drawn foul by Abbey Sutherland chips in a couple free throws. Jefferson added nine points of the 18 points in the period with some assisted connection from Wilson and the Huskies were up by 11. A strong start from Idoko, Jefferson, and Wilson lead to a 16-point lead in the final three minutes of the game. The Colonels continued to push through going on an eight-point run with a minute left but with a hand full of free throws, the Huskies closed the game to a 70-61 victory.  

The Huskies were led by Timia Jefferson with a career high 28 points and Kennedy Wilson with a career high 18 points and an added nine assists. N'Denasija Collins added 11 points and lead the team with 10 rebounds. Patience Idoko added six points, three steals and five rebounds. After having missed action from Wednesday's game, Marilyn Nzoiwu contributed where she dominates with six rebounds and five blocks. HBU scored 42.9 percent from the field with 17 points off the opponents 14 turnovers and totaled 35 rebounds. 

Nicholls was led by Chyna Allen with 19 points and three steals while Chelsea Cain had 18 points and her leading 11 rebounds. Adrian Mann added 11 points and Anna McKendree added seven. Bryanna Washington contributed six points and six rebounds. The Colonels went 39.6 percent from the field with 10 points off Huskies 10 turnovers.  

The Huskies will start their first conference games on the road with back-to-back away against Sam Houston on Feb. 3 at 6:30 and Northwestern State on Feb. 6 at 1:00.
