On March 14, the Southland Conference announced all remaining competitions and championships for the 2020 season would be canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Several HBU seniors in men's and women's golf, track and field, beach volleyball, softball and baseball had just begun their final seasons and did not have the opportunity to complete their athletic careers and compete for a conference championship.
HBU Athletics is honoring each of those seniors with their own Senior Day here on
HBUHuskies.com. Each weekday for seven weeks, a different senior will be featured, so please make sure to retweet, like and reply to the Twitter post to show them how much you support them and appreciate how much they have meant to the HBU community.
C Heidi Jaquez - Softball
Senior catcher
Heidi Jaquez appeared in and started 153 games out of a possible 154 played by the team during her four years with the Huskies. When the 2020 season came to its abrupt halt, she was tied for second in the Southland Conference with eight doubles through 22 games while batting .284 with 13 Runs batted in and 12 runs scored.
Â
"I think my favorite memory at HBU has to be senior year," said Jaquez. "All my four years at HBU, this year was the year we felt like a true team. Outside of softball we all got along and would go hang out and just enjoy life. Most importantly, between the chalk lines we played like a team encouraging each individual along the way. As a team, my favorite memory was when our coaches allowed us to participate in a mardi gras parade and ride on the float as a team, throwing out beads to the crowd. I looked around and everyone had a smile on their face enjoying each other's company and that is a memory we will all share. Individually, my favorite memory is the first and last conference game of my senior year. I had no idea this would be the last series I would play as a true senior. We were playing Nicholls and all we needed was two more runs to run-rule them. There was a runner on second base, a new pitcher had just come in, and the first pitch I hit a walk-off home run to win the game!"
Â
A career .286 hitter, Jaquez compiled 83 runs scored and 68 RBI. She also totaled 15 home runs, 25 doubles and seven triples while posting a .366 on-base percentage, drawing 49 walks. Defensively, Jaquez was stellar as a catcher with a .978 fielding percentage on 585 defensive chances. She also threw out 47 would-be base-stealers.
Â
Jaquez led the Huskies in runs scored in both 2018 and 2019 and over four seasons enjoyed 35 multi-hit games, recording three hits in a game five times and four hits on two occasions. Off the field, she has earned five Dean's List honors and has been named on the Southland Conference Commissioner's Honor Roll three times.
Â
"HBU has shaped me greatly," Jaquez added. "I think when we all go off to college we truly are living independently. HBU helps with that. They provide us guidance each step of the way. I think I have learned to be more independent, outspoken and a leader."
