On March 14, the Southland Conference announced all remaining competitions and championships for the 2020 season would be canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Several HBU seniors in men's and women's golf, track and field, beach volleyball, softball and baseball had just begun their final seasons and did not have the opportunity to complete their athletic careers and compete for a conference championship.
HBU Athletics is honoring each of those seniors with their own Senior Day here on
HBUHuskies.com. Each weekday over the next seven weeks, a different senior will be featured, so please make sure to retweet, like and reply to the Twitter post to show them how much you support them and appreciate how much they have meant to the HBU community.
Cal Clark - Baseball
Senior third baseman
Cal Clark enjoyed one of his best games as a Husky right before the 2020 season screeched to a halt. He went 2-for-4 with two doubles and three RBIs in a 7-2 victory on the road against defending Southland Conference regular-season champion Sam Houston State on March 6.
For his career, he hit .261 with a .361 on-base percentage, eight doubles, a triple, 17 RBIs and 22 runs. For all he accomplished during play, his favorite memory did not come during a game.
"We were pulling the tarp on a windy day and a gust grabbed the tarp, sending
Trevor Fonseca flying through the air," Clark said. "It was initially very scary, but once we realized he was OK, it became one of the funniest moments of my life."
In 12 games, including nine starts this year, the Fairfax, Iowa, native was hitting .242 with a .381 on-base percentage, two doubles, four RBIs and seven runs. Last season, Clark hit .266 with six doubles, a triple, 13 RBIs and 15 runs in 40 games.
"I would like to thank the coaches for giving me the opportunity to compete at the Division I level and be a part of their program," Clark said. "I am excited to remain around the team and continue to support HBU Baseball and Athletics in new ways."
Cal will be staying in Houston, accepting a position as an audit associate at RSM that he will begin in the fall.
"My experience at HBU is one that was much-needed for me," Clark said. "Being from Iowa and attending junior college 10 minutes from home, I needed the experience of being on my own and living in a big city. When I first got to HBU, my plan was to get my education, play baseball and return home to Iowa as soon as I wrapped up my career. Ultimately, I built many great friendships and relationships, realizing Houston provided me a great opportunity to start my professional career. There is so much post-college opportunity available to students that attend HBU. I never thought I would be somebody who would love a big-city lifestyle, but I have come to realize that it will be a great opportunity while I am young."
