METAIRIE, Louisiana – The Huskies swept a pair of games in day two of The Big Easy Classic with wins over reigning Conference USA Champions Louisiana Tech and Jackson State, 6-1 and 6-0.
Game 1: The HBU Huskies started off hot against the Louisiana Tech Lady Techsters with
Heidi Jaquez leading off the game with a single to right field followed by an
Avery Drake double down the right field line scoring Jaquez from first base, Drake advanced to third on a fielding error by the catcher on the throw to home. Drake scored on the next play by a
Katy Schaefer SAC fly in foul territory.
The Huskies added to their lead by a
Riley Bullen solo homerun to left field making the score 3-0 in the top of the second.
The Lady Techsters scored their first and only run in the bottom of the third by a double down the left field line by Ka Anderson followed by a Zoe Hicks single to left field that scored Anderson making it 3-1.
The Huskies tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the fifth by three straight hits from a single by
Amber Lotz followed by back to back doubles from Jaquez and Drake extending the Huskies lead to 5-1.
The Huskies go on to win the game by a 6-1 score and dominate pitching performance by freshman
Madison Cotton in her collegiate debut Saturday morning. Cotton went the distance notching her first career complete game giving up one run on five hits with four strikeouts and two walks on the day.
Game 2: The Huskies got off to an early lead in the first inning against the Jackson State Lady Tigers after Jaquez reached first on a throwing error and advanced to second followed by the throw. Jaquez advanced to third on a passed ball and then scored on a Schaefer single to the pitcher.
Elliott Estes started her junior campaign for the Huskies in the circle going toe-to-toe with Kayla Owens keeping the game a close 1-0 score. Estes was relieved by sophomore transfer
Sarah Venker after four innings of work giving up one hit and no runs with three strikeouts.
The Huskies scored one more run on back to back doubles by
Jasie Roberts and
Shelby Echols. Bullen followed with a single sending Echols to third.
Caitlyn Brockway reached on a fielder's choice scoring Echols and Bullen advanced to second on the play. An
Amber Lotz double scored Bullen and sent Brockway to third. Brockway scored on a Jaquez single the following play making the score 5-0.
The Huskies went on to win, 6-0, and earn their first double header sweep of the season.
HBU ends the tournament Sunday morning with a matchup against Alabama A&M at 10 a.m.
The Huskies head out to San Antonio to face the UTSA Roadrunners on Wednesday evening at 6 p.m.
