HOUSTON – The HBU men's basketball team is throwing it back this Saturday, wearing their Hustlin' Husky throwbacks from the mid-1970's when they host Northwestern State in Sharp Gym at 7:00 p.m. in a Southland Conference matchup. Husky fans can watch the game on the Husky Sports Network with Lonnie King providing play-by-play via HBUHuskies.com.
The Huskies (3-17, 3-8 SLC) are looking to make it a three-game win streak on Saturday after downing Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at home last Saturday and picking up a 79-76 road win at Southeastern Louisiana this past Wednesday which marked the program's first ever win in Hammond, La. Jalon Gates is averaging 20 points per game while junior
Ian DuBose has averaged a double-double of 12 points and 13 rebounds. Sophomore
Benjamin Uloko has averaged 13 points and six rebounds off the bench.
As a team in conference play, HBU owns a rebounding margin of +2.6 through 11 games. Over the past eight games, however, the Huskies have out-rebounded their opponents by 6.3 rebounds per game. As a team, the Huskies are once again among the best offensive rebounding squads in the nation with an average of 12.8 offensive boards per game which is 24
th in the country. Over the last three seasons, HBU ranked 10
th nationally in 2016-17, first in 2017-18 and fourth last season on the offensive glass.
Northwestern State (9-12, 6-6 SLC) got the better of the Huskies when the two teams met in Natchitoches, La. in early January, snapping HBU's four-game win streak against the Demons. DuBose led the Huskies in scoring in that game with 20 while
Noah Thomasson added 17 off the bench. NSU shot 60.3 percent from the floor in that game.
The Demons are led by junior forward Chudier Bile who is averaging 13.9 ppg and 7.4 rpg and leads the team with 33 blocked shows this season. Junior Jairus Roberson is adding 11 ppg while freshman Nikos Chougkaz is contributing 9.2 ppg and 7.3 rpg. NSU is shooting 43.3 percent from the floor as a team and is tops in the league in field goal percentage defense, holding opponents just below 40 percent from the field.
The Huskies will play their next two games on the road beginning Wednesday, Feb. 12, with a visit to Abilene, Texas to face Abilene Christian before taking on Lamar in Beaumont next Saturday, Feb. 15.
