HUNTSVILLE, Texas – The HBU Huskies finished out the weekend splitting Saturday's double header with a win over Providence University, 5-3, and a loss to George Mason University, 5-1.
Game 1: The HBU Huskies started off the second day of the Bearkat Invitational scoring in the bottom of the first inning by an
Avery Drake walk and later scored on a
Heidi Jaquez double to center. Jaquez.
The Providence Friars scored after a Nunez walk who later scored on an RBI double to the Friars Compton tying the game up 1-1.
HBU answered with a one out double by
Jasie Roberts who was driven in by another Jaquez double giving the Huskies a 2-1 lead.
Caitlyn Brockway singled to center that advanced Jaquez to third but later scored on an error by the center fielder that advanced Brockway to second. Freshman
Katy Schaefer follows up with a two-run homerun making the score 5-1.
The Friars added on two more runs in the top of the fifth by a Nunez double to left center followed by a Compton two-run homer to left making the score 5-3.
Sarah Venker was in the circle for the Huskies and earned her first win on the season. Venker threw a complete game giving up three runs on six hits while striking out eight batters. The Huskies improved their record to 7-2.
Riley Bullen,
Kamryn Parker and
Amber Lotz each contributed to the Huskies six hits in the game.
Game 2: The Huskies fell to the George Mason Patriots 5-1, after the Patriots got to a commanding lead scoring five runs in the first four innings.
After HBU was down 5-0,
Amber Lotz stepped up to the plate for her second time and crushed a double to center field and later scored by a
Shelby Echols who was thrown out trying to extend her double to a triple at third base.
Elliott Estes received her first loss on the season (2-1) after 2.2 innings while giving up two runs on four hits, one earned.
Lyndie Swanson relieved Estes and closed out the third inning. In .2 innings of work Swanson gave up three runs on three hits but the runs were unearned.
Jessica Patak finished off the last 2.2 innings giving up two hits while striking out three batters.
Jasie Roberts went 2-3 and
Riley Bullen went 1-3 each contributing to the Huskies six hits in the matchup.
