HOUSTON – After three road games against one of the toughest opening schedules in the country the HBU men's basketball team will open the home portion of its schedule on Saturday against crosstown rival Rice at 7:00 p.m. inside Sharp Gym. The game will be broadcast on the Husky Sports Network with Lonnie King providing play-by-play available at HBUHuskies.com.
HBU (0-3) has, according to ESPN, played the 10
th-toughest schedule in the nation to this point in the season with road matchups against TCU, No. 18 Arizona State and SMU. Senior
Ty Dalton currently leads the Huskies with 12.3 points per game and is shooting 46.2 percent (6-of-13) from three-point range. A pair of juniors,
Hunter Janacek and
Pedro Castro, are also averaging double-figures in scoring with Janacek scoring 11 ppg to Castro's 11 ppg. Castro has also been the team's top rebounder, pulling down 7.3 boards per game.
In the Huskies' most recent game at SMU, sophomore
Zach Iyeyemi made his first career start and posted career-highs of 10 points and five rebounds in 25 minutes on the floor while fellow sophomore
Jason Thompson made his season debut, adding seven points and three rebounds off the bench.
Rice (3-0) is perfect through three games, winning their opener at Incarnate Word and then defeating a pair of non-Division I opponents. The Owls have relied on high percentage shots to this point in the season, connecting on 48 percent (98-of-204) from the floor but just 31.8 percent (28-of-88) from beyond the arc. In the Owls' most recent game, a win over LeTourneau, sophomore forward Max Fiedler posted a double-double of 16 points and 11 rebounds.
Sophomore Travis Evee, a transfer from VMI, is leading the team in scoring on the season at 14.3 ppg and has been the team's top threat from deep, knocking down 9-of-21 (42.9 percent) of his threes. Fiedler, meanwhile, is averaging a double-double of 14 points and 11.3 rpg while also leading the team with 11 assists.
HBU is 3-9 all-time against the Owls with Rice winning the last two meetings following a three-game win streak by the Huskies. Last season, the Huskies fell at Rice by a score of 96-84.
