DENTON, Texas – After playing its last three games in Houston, the HBU men's basketball team hits the road for a pair beginning on Thursday, Dec. 17, against the North Texas Mean Green at the Super Pit for a 7:00 p.m. tip-off. The game will be broadcast on YouTube Live while Husky fans can listen in on the Husky Sports Network with Lonnie King providing play-by-play available at HBUHuskies.com.
In the Huskies' (1-5) last game at Rice, the team got a career-best performance out of junior
Pedro Castro who finished the day with 19 points on 8-of-16 shooting with nine rebounds and a pair of blocked shots. Freshman
Za-Ontay Boothman added 15 for the Huskies while junior
Darius Lee gave the team 13 points in 13 minutes off the bench.
Through six games, HBU is averaging 4.3 blocked shots per game for the top average among Southland Conference teams. The last time an HBU team averaged at least four blocked shots per game for a season was the 2015-16 squad. Castro's six blocked shots are tops for the Huskies as one of six Huskies with at least three blocks.
North Texas (2-3) owns home wins over Mississippi Valley State and Arkansas-Pine Bluff with losses at Arkansas, Mississippi State and West Virginia. Senior guard Javion Hamlet leads the team with 11.4 points per game and is averaging 5.2 assists per outing. Zachary Simmons, a 6-9 senior forward, is the team's top rebounder with 7.8 rebounds per game and is second with 10.2 ppg. As a team, the Mean Green are shooting 40.4 percent from beyond the arc with junior Mardrez McBride leading the way at 62.5 percent (10-of-16) from deep.
HBU last played North Texas on Feb. 15, 2010 in Sharp Gym with the Mean Green earning a 107-87 win. The last time HBU visited the Super Pit was Dec. 15, 2008, falling 88-76.
Following Thursday's game, the Huskies will keep heading north to Norman, Okla. for a matchup with Big 12 foe Oklahoma on Saturday, Dec. 18, afternoon at 4:00 p.m.
