WBB: HBU Cruises Past McMurry, 103-30

Six Huskies score in double figures



HOUSTON – Six players scored in double figures for HBU and the Huskies outscored McMurry, 30-1, in the fourth quarter to roll to a 103-30 victory in a non-conference women's basketball matchup Saturday afternoon in Sharp Gym.
 
The 73-point margin of victory is the third-largest in HBU history, behind a 98-20 win over National Christian on Dec. 4, 2001, and the Huskies' 102-27 victory over Southwest Adventist on Jan. 29, 2001.
 
Sophomore forward N'Denasija Collins led the Huskies (2-2) with 15 points and added six rebounds, while senior forward Patience Idoko scored 14 points on 7-of-9 shooting from the field. Sophomore guard Kennedy Wilson added 13 points and dished out a career-high nine assists and had four steals, with sophomore guard Timia Jefferson scoring 12 points. Junior center Marilyn Nzoiwu posted 12 points and seven rebounds and freshman guard Enya Maguire chipped in with a career-high 11 points.
 
Taya Bridges led the War Hawks with 12 points and seven rebounds and Destiny Mathews scored eight points.
 
HBU shot 52.7 percent from the field, while holding McMurry to only 22.4 percent. The Huskies hit 5-of-14 3-pointers, with the War Hawks making only 1-of-12. HBU went 20-for-22 from the free throw line and McMurry made 7-of-12. The Huskies outrebounded the War Hawks, 46-30, and only turned the ball over 11 times, while making 19 steals, leading to 29 McMurry turnovers.
 
Collins nailed a three, then took a feed from Wilson for a fast-break layup to cap a 9-0 run as the Huskies took a 15-5 lead to start the game. Collins scored 10 first-quarter points as HBU led, 20-9, after one.
 
Idoko checked in an immediately made an impact with three-straight layups as HBU outscored McMurry, 14-2, to begin the second period and open up a 23-point lead with 5:29 remaining in the half. The Warhawks trimmed the lead to 17, but Anna Maguire buried a three with 49 seconds on the clock to put the Huskies back up by 20. Bridges answered with a 3-pointer, but Enya Maguire hit a runner in the lane at the buzzer to give the Huskies a 41-22 lead heading into the break.
 
Wilson started off the second-half scoring with a three and HBU scored the first eight points of the third quarter as part of a 14-2 run. Nzoiwu scored eight points during a 12-0 spurt that extended the Huskies' lead to 41 at 67-26 with 2:26 to go in the frame. HBU outscored McMurry, 32-7, in the third and led 73-29 going into the final period.
 
The Huskies blitzed the War Hawks in the fourth, holding them to one point. After a McMurry free throw, HBU scored the last 28 points of the game for a 73-point victory.
 
The Huskies will have a quick turnaround, as they host LeTourneau Monday at 5 p.m. in Sharp Gym.
