HOUSTON - HBU opens the 2020-21 season with a crosstown matchup against Rice in non-conference women's basketball Wednesday at 2 p.m. in Tudor Fieldhouse. No fans will be allowed into the arena, but the Husky Sports Network audio broadcast with Bill Cousins will be available on KKME Digital Radio and the game will be shown on CUSATV.
 
The Huskies' top returning scorer is sophomore guard 
Timia Jefferson, who averaged 10.3 points per game -- the most among Southland Conference freshmen last season. HBU's leading scorer from a year ago, 
Megan Valdez-Crader, is currently opting out of the 2020-21 season. The Huskies also return their leading rebounder and shot blocker in junior center 
Marilyn Nzoiwu, who averaged 5.1 boards per game and rejected 35 shots. Sophomore guard 
Kennedy Wilson, sophomore forward 
N'Denasija Collins and junior guard 
Julija Vujakovic give HBU four of its five leading scorer back for the new campaign.
 
Rice is the defending Conference USA champion, but graduated CUSA Player of the Year and All-American Erica Ogwumike, who averaged 19.0 points and 10.3 rebounds per game. Nancy Mulkey is the Owls' leading returning scorer and rebounder with 11.6 points and 6.0 boards per game. Lauren Schwartz also returns after averaging 9.6 points and 4.0 rebounds as a freshman.
 
Rice leads the all-time series against HBU, 4-0, with the Owls claiming a 67-45 win in the last meeting on Nov. 18, 2017, in Tudor.
 
The Huskies return to action when they face Texas Tech Saturday at 2 p.m. in Lubbock.
