NATCHITOCHES, La. – The HBU men's basketball team will look to make it five-straight wins over Northwestern State when the Huskies face the Demons on Sunday afternoon in a Southland Conference tilt inside Prather Coliseum. The Huskies (1-10, 1-1 SLC) are coming off their first win of the season, a 111-107 overtime victory over Central Arkansas, in which junior
Ian DuBose recorded the highest-ever point total by an HBU player in an NCAA Division I game. DuBose poured in 44 points, tied for the fourth-most points scored in a Division I game this season and the most by a Southland player since the 2010-11 season.
DuBose, averaging 19 points per game, and senior
Jalon Gates, averaging 17.4 ppg, rank first and third in the conference in scoring, respectively. The duo are both also in the top 90 nationally in scoring. As a team, HBU is 37
th in the country in scoring, averaging 79.7 ppg.
Northwestern State (4-8, 1-2 SLC) is 4-1 at home so far this season, including their lone Division I win over SLC rival Lamar on Dec. 21. In their last game, the Demons fell on the road at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi by a 67-62 margin. Freshman Nikos Chougkaz finished with a double-double in that game of 12 points and 16 rebounds.
Chudier Bile, a junior, leads the Demons with 12.8 ppg and 6.9 rebounds per game while Chougkaz is adding 9.4 ppg and 6.0 rpg. Jairus Robertson, a junior guard, is second on the team with 9.8 ppg while sophomore Brian White leads the way with 3.9 assists per outing. As a team, NSU is shooting 42.6 percent from the floor but just 31.2 percent from beyond the arc.
HBU has won four-straight over the Demons, including the last three trips to Prather Coliseum. Last season, the Huskies earned a 92-54 win inside Sharp Gym after playing three-straight on the road against the Demons. All-time, the Huskies are 17-15 against NSU.
The next three games will all be played in Sharp Gym for the Huskies, beginning Saturday, Jan. 11, when Lamar comes to town for a 7:00 p.m. contest. The following week will bring New Orleans on Wednesday, Jan. 15, and Sam Houston State on Saturday, Jan. 18.
