Junior 2B Trent Franson goes 2-for-4 with a run



HOUSTON - HBU took an early lead with a run in the first, but were shut down the rest of the way as Central Arkansas claimed the Southland Conference baseball series opener, 4-1, Friday afternoon at Husky Field.

Junior second baseman Trent Franson went 2-for-4 and scored a run, while junior rightfielder Brandon Bena drove in the lone run for the Huskies (13-28, 6-13 SLC).

Senior righthander Zach Carter (3-7) allowed four runs on 10 hits with six strikeouts in eight innings.

Beau Orlando went 3-for-4, while Joshmar Doran went 2-for-2 and scored a run for the Bears (22-20, 12-7). Kolby Johnson went 2-for-4 and scored a run, while Nathaniel Sagdahl doubled and drove in a pair.

Cody Davenport (4-3) gave up one run on six hits with seven strikeouts and two walks in seven innings, while Gavin Stone hurled two perfect innings with a pair of strikeouts to notch his third save.

Franson singled in the first, stole second, then scored on Bena's single up the middle, putting HBU ahead, 1-0.

UCA scored a pair in the third Doran was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. After Johnson reached on a fielder's choice, Sagdahl doubled to right center to tie the game, then Josh Ragan's two-out double to left put the Bears ahead for good, 2-1.

The Bears loaded the bases with no outs in the seventh and got an RBI groundout by Sagdahl and a sacrifice fly by Anderson to extend their lead to 4-1.

The series continues with a 1 p.m. start Saturday, followed by a 2 p.m. first pitch in Sunday's finale.
