Senior RHP Zach Carter hurls seven shutout innings for Huskies



HOUSTON - Every HBU starter recorded a hit and scored a run as the Huskies pounded out 14 hits and rolled past Northwestern State, 10-2, in the Southland Conference series opener Friday afternoon at Husky Field.

Junior rightfielder Brandon Bena went 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles and scored a run, while junior leftfielder Ryne Edmondson went 2-for-4 with a double, a home run and drove in a pair for the Huskies (7-18, 1-6 SLC). Junior first baseman Johnny Gonzales went 2-for-5 with a double, a triple, an RBI and scored twice and senior shortstop Derek Reilly went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs.

Senior righthander Zach Carter (2-4) hurled seven shutout innings, holding NSU to two hits with seven strikeouts and three walks. Jacob Coats pitched the final two innings, allowing two runs on two hits with a pair of strikeouts.

Caleb Ricca went 2-for-3 with a home run and drove in two, while Lenni Kunert singled and scored for the Demons (13-10, 5-5).

Ridge Heisler (2-3) took the loss for NSU, giving up eight runs, six earned, on 10 hits with a strikeout and a walk in 3.2 innings. Austin Reich allowed just one hit in 2.1 innings and Evan Daigle allowed two runs on three hits in two innings of relief.

Bena led off the second with a double and came home on Reilly's two-out base hit to right. The Huskies strung together three-straight singles in the third by Gonzales, Bena and senior catcher Erik Voller to take a 2-0 lead.

The Huskies erupted for six runs in the bottom of the fourth. Junior second baseman Nathan Soriano led off with a single and scored on Reilly's RBI double into the leftfield corner. After a sacrifice bunt by junior centerfielder Chase Talbot, senior designated hitter Anthony Jones reached on a fielder's choice as Reilly beat the play at home. Junior third baseman Trent Franson blooped an RBI double down the rightfield line, then Gonzales ripped an RBI triple into the rightfield corner. Gonzales scored when Voller reached on an error, then Edmondson capped the rally with an RBI double to extend HBU's lead to 8-0.

Edmondson led off the seventh with his first career home run at HBU, then Talbot blasted a solo shot to right for his team-leading third homer of the season for a 10-0 lead.

Ricca got the Demons on the board with a two-run home run to left in the eighth.

The series continues with a 1 p.m. first pitch Saturday, followed by the series finale Sunday at 2 p.m.
