Tori Hinojosa clinched both matches, as the Huskies slipped past Texas A&M-Kingsville and New Mexico by 3-2 scores Friday at the Emerald Beach Hotel Classic at the Javelina Beach Volleyball Courts.
Sophomore
Brennan Miller and freshman
Lindsay Harris played the five position and were the only other pair to win both matches. They got the Huskies (2-1) on the board with a 25-23, 21-17 win over TAMU-K's Lauren Kadilis and Nicole Murff. Freshmen
Lauren Huggins and
Conley Harris downed Christina Gragasin and TaylorLynn Noga, 21-10, 21-18. Horton and Hinojosa followed with a 21-19, 21-15 victory over Kylexus Block and Madison Brabham. The Huskies fell at the number three spot, with freshmen
Natalie Bennett and
Maddie Butters dropping a 21-17, 21-16 decision to Macy Berg and Haley Hutchinson and senior
Bailey Banks and
Kylie Bryan being edged at number two by Tenley Housler and Whitney Walker, 27-29, 21-17, 15-11.
Miller and Harris got HBU started with a 21-13, 21-17 victory over UNM's Jaclyn Inclan and Claire Nenninger at five, but Emily Nenninger and Abbey Willison knotted the match by outlasting Harris and Huggins at four, 18-21, 21-17, 15-13. Butter and Bennett regained the lead for the Huskies by cruising past Joey Benson and Carly Beddingfield at three, 21-13, 21-10, before Horton and Hinojosa put the match away with a 21-11, 21-18 win over Lauren Twitty and Dali Rosado. Banks and Bryan dropped another though three-setter at two to Morgan Schreckler and Yasmin Tan, 16-21, 21-14, 16-14.
The Huskies wrap up the tournament with a pair of matches Saturday, beginning with San Jose State at 9 a.m. followed by Missouri Baptist at 1 p.m.
