BEAUMONT, Texas – The HBU men's basketball team ran into a hot-shooting Lamar Cardinals team on Wednesday evening inside the Montagne Center, falling 110-75 in the Southland Conference matchup.
The two teams traded baskets early with a layup from Josh Nzeakor and a three by Jordan Hunter giving Lamar (17-12, 10-6 SLC) a 13-8 lead but
Stephen O'Suji answered with a three for the Huskies (10-16, 6-9 SLC) to pull back within two. Two minutes later,
Ty Dalton would score three the old fashioned way to again get HBU within two, 19-17, but that was as close as the Huskies would get the rest of the half as Lamar knocked down 12-of-18 (66.7 percent) from beyond the arc in the half, one shy of their season-high of 13 made threes in a game.
In the second half, the Huskies were able to pull within 13 three times with the last of those coming on an
Ian DuBose trey making it 66-53 at the 14:52 mark. The Huskies were unable to put together and sustained runs as the Cardinals kept them at bay in the second half, continuing their hot-shooting from the first half.
Dalton fell one point shy of his career-high, leading the Huskies with 20 points on 5-of-6 shooting from the floor, 3-of-3 from behind the arc and a perfect 7-of-7 from the charity stripe.
Edward Hardt ended the night 4-of-5 from the floor for 11 points while
Jackson Stent added 10 off the bench.
Lamar finished the game shooting 63 percent (17-of-27) from three-point range and 57.5 percent (41-of-71) for the game. The Cardinals held a 44-28 advantage on the boards.
The Huskies finished the game shooting 38.7 percent (24-of-62) from the field and 34.6 percent (9-of-26) from three.
With the results around the league on Wednesday evening, the Huskies finish the night in a four-way tie for seventh place with Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Central Arkansas and Northwestern State.
The Huskies will be back in the friendly confines of Sharp Gym for the team's final homestand beginning on Saturday, Mar. 2, for a 7:00 p.m. matchup with the McNeese Cowboys.
