BSB: HBU Pulls Away From Northeastern in Opener, 9-3

Junior 1B Johnny Gonzales goes 3-for-4 with 3 doubles, 3 RBIs



HOUSTON – Every HBU starter reached safely and the Huskies scored four in the eighth to cement a 9-3 victory over Northeastern in the baseball season opener Friday afternoon at Husky Field.
 
HBU (1-0) pounded out 15 hits, eight of them for extra bases, with junior first baseman Johnny Gonzales going 3-for-4 with three doubles and three RBIs and junior shortstop Nathan Soriano going 3-for-5 with a triple, two RBIs and two runs. Junior third baseman Trent Franson was 2-for-4 with two runs, senior second baseman Derek Reilly was 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles, an RBI and a run and senior designated hitter Anthony Jones was 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI and a run.
 
Senior righthander Zach Carter (1-0) allowed one run on three hits with five strikeouts and two walks in six innings. Senior closer JT Newton held Northeastern to one hit and walked one over the final two innings to earn his first save of the year.
 
Scott Holzwasser was 2-for-2 with a triple, reached safely all four times, and scored a run for Northeastern (0-1). Ryan Solomon, Jake Rosen and Jeff Costello each drove in runs for the Huskies.
 
Tyler Brown (0-1) took the loss, giving up four runs on seven hits with five strikeouts and a walk in four innings. Kyle Murphy allowed four runs on four hits in 1.2 innings.
 
HBU got an RBI double from Gonzales in the first, then he followed Soriano's triple in the third with an RBI groundout to put the Huskies ahead 2-0.
 
Northeastern got on the board in the fourth when Holzwasser led off with a triple and scored on Solomon's sacrifice fly. HBU answered with two in the bottom half as junior leftfielder Ryne Edmondson and Reilly led off with back-to-back doubles and senior catcher Erik Voller plating Reilly with a sacrifice fly for a 4-1 lead.
 
Northeastern once again got back within one with a pair in the seventh when Corey DiLoreto and Rosen led off with back-to-back doubles and Rosen scored on a Costello sac fly. HBU came back with a run in the bottom half as Franson led off with a single and eventually scored on wild pitch to make the score 5-3.
 
In the bottom of the eighth, Voller singled and Jones followed with an RBI double. Soriano delivered a two-run single to right, then scored on Gonzales's third double of the afternoon to cap the scoring.
