HOUSTON – More than a month into the 2019-20 and the HBU men's basketball team is set to play its home-opener this Saturday inside Sharp Gymnasium when the Huskies take on Southern Conference member Samford at 7:00 p.m. Husky fans can watch the Husky Sports Network broadcast with Lonnie King live via HBUHuskies.com.
HBU (0-6) is one of just six NCAA Division I teams yet to play a game on its home floor this season. That changes when they face off against former Trans America Athletic Conference rival Samford (5-5) in a rematch from a game in Birmingham, Ala. last season. In addition to the Huskies' home game, two other schools will play their home-opener on Saturday.
Of the Huskies' six opponents this season, Texas Tech and Dayton were ranked at the time of the game while another, Michigan, jumped to No. 4 in the nation a week and a half after playing HBU in Ann Arbor.
Playing against stiff competition with their strength of schedule still ranked first by ESPN, the Huskies are 79
th nationally with 8.7 made three-pointers per game and their 12.17 offensive rebounds per game ranks 73
rd in the country.
Junior
Ty Dalton leads the team in rebounding (6.0 rpg), assists (3.2 apg) and steals (1.7 spg). Within the Southland Conference, he ranks eighth in assists and 13
th in steals.
Ian DuBose, meanwhile, continues his march toward 1,000 points and sits just eight away from the milestone with 992 career points through 67 career games. The junior has started every game the Huskies have played since his freshman season.
So far this season Samford has gone a perfect 5-0 at home while going winless in its five games on the road. The Bulldogs are led by senior guard Josh Sharkey who is averaging 16 ppg and nearly nine assists per contest. Sharkey ranks in the top 10 in the nation in both total assists (62) and total steals (26). Samford also boasts three other players averaging double-figures and at least five rebounds per game.
As a team, the Bulldogs are 24
th nationally in rebounds per game, pulling down 41.9 boards per contest, while their 79 total steals on the year puts them 28
th in the country. Samford owns a scoring margin of +5, averaging 74.7 ppg.
HBU will remain in Houston for its next game but will play across town at Tudor Fieldhouse against the Rice Owls on Saturday, Dec. 14 at 7:00 p.m.
