HOUSTON – The HBU women's soccer team went into the half tied 1-1 but a pair of second half goals pushed the visiting Lamar Cardinals past the Huskies, 3-1, on Sunday afternoon at Sorrels Field.
Avery Cortez put an attempt on target for the Huskies (2-15-0, 1-9-0 SLC) in the eighth minute but it was Lamar (12-6-0, 9-1-0 SLC) that struck first with Esther Okoronkwo receiving a pass in the 18-yard box from Madison Ledet, spinning and beating HBU keeper
Karla Ramirez at the 11:06 mark. The Huskies responded in the 26
th minute when
Tayah Reynolds dribbled the ball up from midfield and found Cortez to the left where the junior slotted a shot across the box and inside the right post to even the score. Ramirez made a diving stop in the final seconds of the half to keep things even heading into the intermission.
In the second half, the Cardinals' Lucy Ashworth put LU ahead in the 49
th minute, lofting a shot over the head of Ramirez. Ashworth then secured the brace with her second goal in the 52
nd minute. In the 65
th minute,
Jessica Nevils dribbled down the right side and cut in toward goal, lifting a shot over the LU keeper but it bounced off the inside of the pipe and stayed out.
Cortez's goal was her sixth of the season as she attempted four shots with three on goal in the match. In goal, Ramirez finished with six saves. Lamar attempted 21 shots to the Huskies' 10.
The Huskies will close the 2019 season on Friday, Nov. 1, when they host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi for Senior Night and a 5:00 p.m. kickoff.
